The Bobs Lake Cottages & Escapes Guide to Beers and Breweries
We at Bobs Lake Cottages & Escapes are big fans of the brews. Our guide shows you the best ways to enjoy a glass of the cold one, as well as several notable breweries that you must visit during your stay with us.

Ace the Beer Flight
Even though you have your favorites—lagers, blondes, IPAs—it’s never a bad idea to try out new styles, especially when visiting a brewery for the first time. When you’re feeling adventurous, order a beer flight: two-ounce pours of what’s on tap. Here are three tips to make the most out of your tasting.
- Challenge your palate. Start with a beer with a low IBU (international bitterness unit) such as cream or golden ales, and American lagers. Then slowly move to mids, like pale ales and stouts. End with IPAs and imperial stouts, as they have the highest bitterness.
- Take sips. Even if the beers come in sampler shot glasses, you don’t have to down everything in one go. Sip and savor!
- Get paired. If you’re doing a flight with a friend or a group, share a few appetizers. It helps to know which food complements the flavor of each beer.

Beer-Based Cocktails for non-fans of suds
- Lagerita. Combine one ounce of tequila, 0.5 ounces of Cointreau, a squeeze of lime in a tall glass. Add ice and top with lager.
- Radler/Shandy. Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour equal amounts of mixer (lemonade, ginger beer, grapefruit, cola) and beer (Hefeweizen, wheat, Tripel).
- Black velvet. Chill a highball glass and the liquids beforehand. Fill it halfway through with a stout or an imperial stout. Top with sparkling wine.
- Espresso stout. Shake 0.75 ounces of cold espresso and 0.75 ounces of coffee liqueur until frothy. Fill a martini glass almost all the way with a stout and top with the espresso-liqueur mixture.
